MEGABALL

A sheer classic by brothers Ed and Al MackeyMegaball must surely have been installed or played on a good 90% of all Amiga's ever made.  It certainly was one of the best Breakout type games ever released.  Megaball appeared on countless cover disks  (A Demo version)  which was highly playable over around 20 different levels, With the music and graphics bringing joy and pleasure to countless gamers.

Perhaps it is rather sad that Megaball appeared when the Amiga gaming scene was at it best and a great many people simply played the demo rather than pay the asking price to obtain the full version.  However the Full version of Megaball 4 is available as a free download ...So everyone can now relive those Retro moments again.

The Megaball Download

Megaball 4 is available as a zip file contains three ADFs, which are files that act like floppy disks to an emulator.  On these floppies is the full version of MegaBall, complete with the extra music disk and board editor.

Full instructions are given on the site to allow you to run the game on your PC under emulation using Win UAE.  However if you still use an Amiga, All you need is to download the "ZIP" file which unpacks to 3 ADF files.  Then un-archieve the ADF files back to Floppy Disk and install on your Harddrive.

Now we realise from reading various Mailing lists that not everyone fully understands how to deal with Zip/ADF files. So after downloading the Zip file from the above site, You can use a program like "x-Arc" to unarchive the Zip.

ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/util/arc/X-Arc.lha

You will now be left with 3 ADF files. ADF stands for "Amiga Disk Format" .. In short ADF compresses an Amiga Floppy disk into a FILE which can then be sent over the Internet (etc.)

So we now need to change these compressed ADF files back into/on to Floppy disks.  For MegaBall you will require 3 blank formatted floppy disks.

A good program for handling ADF files would be "TransADF" available from the Aminet at:

ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/disk/misc/TransADF.lha

Installing "TransADF" is quite simple, just load it into your Workbench "C" Directory. However "TransADF" works from the dreaded Shell/CLI  (Well known to put a lot of people off).  I for one will never quite understand why some programmers develope these excellent utilities, and do not complete the job by providing a simply GUI, After all not everyone is a CLI guru.

Fortunatly in this instant someone has developed a GUI for TransADF and again this is availabe from the Aminet:

ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/disk/misc/TransADFGUI.lha

transadfgui.gif

Life becomes simple again.  Install TransADFGUI ...Click on it and direct it to the ADF files you downloaded.  This will extract the files to floppy disk. Now it is a case of Installing the full version of Megaball 4 using the supplied on disk 1.

Happy Gaming!
