The first shot by the assassin having struck a tree, deflected off the pavement and ricocheted to hit the innocent bystander, was hurriedly followed by the second ...more accurate shot.
This shot has become well known as "the magic Bullet" because believers of the conspiracy theory claim the trajectory of the shot could not have hit both JFK and Senator Connally.
The belief is that President Kennedy was sitting in the back of the vehicle, directly behind Connelly. The "Magic" Bullet hit the President in the base of the neck, exiting from this throat, then changing direction and hitting Connolly in the shoulder, Then deflecting once again to exit his chest, wound his wrist and lodge in his thigh.
Sound amazing, Sounds unbelievable, Could it then be two separate shots as suspected by the believers of the conspiracy suggestion?
Well.. from the Diagram above it certainly appears as if the bullet took a weird and wonderful path. However as always, truth is stranger than fiction. First let us examine two photographs taken just before the shooting. Please take careful note of the sitting positions of Kennedy (Back left) and Connolly (Front left).
In both these photo's it can readily be seen that President Kennedy was not sitting directly behind Connolly, He was actually in a position farther over to his left. Connolly was sitting closer to his Wife, JFK and his wife were seperated by a Large bunch of Flowers on the back seat. Note: Some witnesses state that they were seperated by a small dog, but this is completely untrue.
So how does this NEW seating position change the idea of a magic bullet? ..Well lets look at a revised Diagram.
As the two men are shown sitting out of line with each other the bullet trajectory now shows it passing straight through the president, hitting Connolly, Deflecting upon exit and hitting his left wrist, before entering his thigh. The trajectory now lines up perfectly with the position of both gentlemens wounds.
Another claim by the supporters of the conspiracy theory, Is that the bullet that hit the president was fired from a position in front of the car. Thus the entry wound was in the presidents neck, with the much larger exit wound in his back.
One of the offical Autopsy photographs is shown below, We leave you to make your own judgement regarding this wound.
To further dismiss the claims of the shot from the front, We enclose a photograph of JFK's bloodstained shirt, which clearly shows the tears left by the bullet exiting OR Entering just below his tie knot.
This is proof that (a) If it was a rear shot, the gunman MUST have been shooting from a higher position and the bullet travelled downwards through the presidents body. Or (b) If it was a frontal shot, then the assassin must have fired from a lower position than the President, as there was no marks on the vechicle relative to it being hit with a bullet, then perhaps the conspiracy theory would suggest the gunman was positioned in the front passinger seatwell.
Of course supporters of the theory will always claim that these photo's have been digitally altered as part of a cover up. I suppose at the end of the day each and every one of us will have our own ideas of what happened on this day.
