Just How Harmful Are Some Cosmetics Ingredients

By Ann Marier

I have been working as a buyer for a major cosmetics company for the last several years, and I have seen firsthand the shake up over cosmetics ingredients that is going on in the industry. Back in the day, the only standard of a cosmetic ingredient was how well it did the job. Cosmetic ingredients would be made out of practically anything and no one cared. Some people say that people in the industry knew about some of the cosmetics makeup health risks, but I think most of them were actually ignorant.

Don't get me wrong – sometimes it pays to look the other way and ignore what might be an creeping suspicion. Nonetheless, no one thought about organic cosmetics ingredients because the synthetic ones seemed to work so well. How could it be dangerous when it made you look so much younger and feel so much better?

Nowadays, we are finding out just how harmful some cosmetics ingredients can be. Every day, new research comes out showing what skincare products can do to the body. Makeup cosmetics have never been put to the same standards as foodstuffs, and the industry does not have to prove that their cosmetics ingredients are safe before using them. Nonetheless, the skin is porous. What you put on your skin gets into your bloodstream one way or another. It is as simple as that.

Most of the make up ingredient supplier companies a decade ago were completely insensitive to this fact. Those that could sell the cheapest, best skin care ingredients to the makeup companies would do the best business. Nowadays, however, it is a whole different story. Natural oils, cosmetics ingredients that haven't been tested on animals, and organic makeup are all the rage. It used to be enough to look healthy. Nowadays, the emphasis is on being healthy as well.

If you're worried about harmful cosmetic ingredients, you are not alone. Unfortunately, sometimes there is no way to tell whether or not a cosmetic ingredient is safe. Sometimes, the only thing you can do is to err on the side of caution. Generally, things made with entirely natural oils and fragrances are safe.

Cosmetics ingredients that involve petroleum products, non-organic products, or anything where you can't pronounce the name, may be unhealthy. Although it is more expensive to buy from a small, private label cosmetics company, it may be worth it. Who knows what we will discover about the ingredients that we have assumed are safe!
