Desktop Icons

Submitted by Ian C Fyvie

In Issue 56 of the CRYPTmag we showed you how to reduce the size of your Desktop Icons, which hopefully helped clean up your computer screen. However lets take this a bit further, because regardless of size, eventually your Desktop WILL get cluttered with the Icons of all the programs you download (And possibly, only use once a month).

In steps a small program by Stardock, called Fences.

This release is a beta / community preview, and will expire on August 31, 2009.

(Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 is a pre-requisite for installation.)

So what does "Fences" do?    Well look at my Computer screenshots.

Not an Icon in sight ... Why? ...Because they are hidden from view, Would YOU like an uncluttered Desktop?

All you have to do to get your Desktop Icons to show is Double Click on your Desktop.

Brilliant, But Stardock`s Fences is only free until August 2009, so get it now or forever have a cluttered Desktop.

So lets get started, and remember you MUST have .NET Framework Version 2.0 or better installed.

If you go the layout route you are presented with a couple of layouts to choose from.  If you have a messy desktop you might want to go with the sort icons layout.  It will put everything into a labeled fence then you can tweak them how you want as you begin using them.

After you choose your layout, Fences is ready to go.  At any time you can go into Fences Settings to change different features, layout, and look of Fences.

You can place as many icons into each fence by dragging the shortcut or icon into the fence.  Individual fences can be easily resized by dragging the outer edges.

Now the desktop icons will be arranged into different categories. You can drag the fences to different areas on the desktop that make most sense to you. You can also rename, customize, and create new fences.

MUST have Software.
