Ultimate boot CD for Windows

By Ian Urie

There's a difference this time, it's for Windows users.
Even better, it's legal!
The disk is the UBCD4Win.
That would be the Ultimate boot CD for Windows to you lot.

As usual, go to the site by clicking on the above grab.

This disk could be your saviour if you are having problems with Windows.
I know, what's the chances of getting a problem with Windows.......

However, since it's legal, you need a working copy of Windows to actually make the disk.
I'm sure that there will be ready made versions out there on the internet, but we'll concern ourselves with the legal version.
I won't dwell on how to make the CD, because the site has an excellent guide on the build process here
Simply download the file for the disk, double click on it (after reading the how to guide),
insert a windows disk (or use your existing hard drive version), and it will build the iso file.
Burn the iso file to a disk, and you're there!

I made the iso file using my Windows XP disk, it complained that it was an OEM version but did make the iso.
After burning the disk, it was time to try it out.
One of the surprises was that it booted into Windows XP professional.
I don't have Windows XP professional.......

Above you can see the first grab of the screen.
It asks to set up the network on boot, and I allowed it
Since I booted from the desktop, it used the LAN, on the laptop, it didn't recognise my wireless card, so no network support for it.
If you're having problems with your computer, this may well be the answer.
Most things can be repaired by this disk.
It has virus checkers, spyware checkers, just for starters.
It even downloads the latest virus signatures before checking the hard disk.

I'll just show some quick grabs of the menus to show some of the items.
This CD is packed with goodies, so don't expect to see all the options.

You can repartition your drive and then move or copy your data after virus checking it first, of course.
Plug in an external or memory stick  if the drive is failing, to save it as well.
How about deleted data?
There are recovery tools on the disk.
Locked yourself out of the computer, forgotten the password?
You can recover or edit them here as well.

Just a few more grabs to show some of the options in action.
This is a seriously good piece of kit for windows users.
Why doesn't Microsoft help support the team that does this?
It's worth its weight in gold!

Superantispyware was one of the utilities that was going to be an article one day on the Crypt...........
Ah well, saves me some work, I suppose.

ubcd11

Why not defragment your drive while you've got this booted?

ubcd12

Fancy having a rummage through your registry?
There are also other registry editors onboard.
I've always liked Regcleaner, nice and powerful, and usually doesn't b**ger everything up.

I've only scratched the surface of what you can do with this disk.
Visit their site.
Download and build the disk
Read the documentation!
Oh, and consider donating to help these guys continue to make advances to this disk .
You may very well need them before they need you.
